Rei Double R & G-Bo The Pro 'Best Of 1992'

Another 'Best Of 92' selection, this time from mixtape legends Rei Double R and G-Bo The Pro. Includes music by Slick Rick, Scarface, Black Sheep, Tim Dog, Ice Cube, Nice N Smooth and a lot more. If you enjoyed the Westwood tape I dropped at the start of the week you'll love this...

These guys aren't aswell known as Doo Wop, Ron G and Kid Capri but definitely made a name for themselves by incorporating a 4-track into the production of their tapes, which gives the mixes and blends an extra edge. That technique was later developed and became the cornerstone of some great tapes by DJs like Dirty Harry, Vlad, Green Lantern and Rectangle.

Thanks to DJ MK for the original tape.

(NB- The file is labelled 'Ray' instead of 'Rei' as thats what was written on the tape. I didnt realise what the correct spelling was til I googled them)

Funkmaster Flex 'Street Jams' on Hot 97 (1994)

This is from the flipside of the tape that the Theodore mix below is taken from. Could possibly even be from the same night. Flex does his thing with some Freddie Foxxx, Jeru, Nas and Wu Tang...

He also drops LL's elusive 'Year Of The Hip Hop', which K Def was meant to be blessing us with a few months ago but has yet to appear.

BONUS!
Flex (or one of his interns) recently uploaded a 1994 Street Jams show with Pete Rock in the mix. You can get that HERE. Hopefully he'll make this a regular thing.

DJ Riz on Hot 97 Street Jams (1994)

Riz dropping a guest mix on Funkmaster Flex's 'Street Jams' show. I ripped this a while back but just realised I never posted it. I'd guess its from around September 1994, so you know its worth a listen

Thanks to DJ MK for the original tape.

DJ Riz & DJ Eclipse - Half Time Vol 1 mixtape (1999)

Riz & Eclipse come with a load of late 90s underground flavour on this tape, aswell throwing in a few freestyles and cuts-n-juggles for good measure.

Thanks to DJ MK for the original tape. I should've posted more recently but Mediafire won't let me upload anything for some reason. Anyone who knows why this might be get in touch! I'm going with Megaupload in the meantime.

Bobbito & Lord Sear on WKCR (1998)

Here's Bobbito (aka Cucumber Slice) and Lord Sear on WKCR back in February 1998. Supernatural and Megahertz are in the studio freestyling, and theres as some dope late 90s indie joints by the likes of Polyrhythm Addicts, High & Mighty and Capital D. Theres a Black Eyed Peas tune on there aswell which just seems weird now...

Big up MK for the original tape.

The heads over at the T.R.O.Y forum are working on collating all the Stretch & Bobbito shows in chronological order.
If anyone out there has recordings of any shows that might not have been uploaded before please go here and contribute!

Shout out to Verge and TheBigSleep!

DJ Ev - School's In Session (1995)

Thought I'd start the new decade off with another tape out of DJ MK's collection.
This mix is by Long Island's DJ Ev, who I first heard of when Stretch Armstrong mentioned him on his (now defunct?) blog.
Ev is very nice on the cuts and from the few tapes I've heard is an all-round dope DJ who went on to roll with Funkmaster Flex's crew. Lots of 1995 goodness on this one. Tracklist is in the comments section

If you like this make sure you check these out:

Stretch Armstrong and DJ Ev 'Back 2 Back' (1996)

DJ Ev 'Hotter This Year' (1996)

Funkmaster Flex & DJ Ev 'Big Dog Pitbulls pt 2' (1998)

Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. Back to work and the old routine tommorow morning. I'll try and dig out some more treats to help you get through the next few weeks!

UPDATE: I got in touch with Ev via his myspace. apparently I got the title wrong!
"it's School's In Session and the Big Dawg Pitbulls Pt 2 tape is also hosted by Redman.
I like the update in your review, however, your original line "should have went on to bigger things" is accurate as well - lol...
Thanks again - Ev"

Kid Capri mixtape 6.20.89

This seems like a pretty good snapshot of what was big in NYC 20 years ago. The Kiiiiid Capri serves up some Heavy D, LL, Big Daddy Kane, BDP, "brand new" Public Enemy and Soul II Soul plus some classic breaks including a nice James Brown section at the end of the tape.

Tony Touch - Tape #53 (96-97)

More heat from the vaults, courtesy of DJ MK. This is some classic Tony Toca from (I'm guessing) around late 96-early 97.

Includes music by Redman, KRS ONE, Mobb Deep, Keith Murray, Rampage and Heltah Skeltah.

Lord Finesse - World Series: Out The Blue (1996)

Another Lord Finesse mix, this time an upfront selection from 1996. Side A is strictly Hip Hop and features Artifacts, Ghostface, Natural Elements and MOP. The flipside is more chilled out with Faith Evans, D'Angelo and Keith Sweat.
Sound quality isn't flawless on this but it definitely has that authentic cassette feel to it!

Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97 (1995)

First up out of DJ MK's stash is this tape of Funkmaster Flex's 'Street Jams' show on Hot 97 from October 1995.
Flex is at his best when he's just allowed to play what he wants and it sounds like he's doing just that here - the big tunes of the day like 'Danger' are dropped alongside some old skool, breaks and R&B. Other music featured includes Heather B, Kaotic Style, D Nice and Biggie aswell as some Wreckx N Effect, Father MC and Lil Shawn.
