Kiss 100 FM, January 1993

Haven't done many R&B posts so here's an hour of Steve Jervier on London's Kiss FM from January '93. The interesting discovery on this tape was the original version of Groove Theory's 'Tell Me' by UK act Rhythm & Bass, which it seems not too many people (on my twitter feed anyway) know about. Both acts were on Sony and it seems like the song was written by GT's Amel Larrieux. Obviously their version with the Edie Brickell sample featuring Brand Nubian is the superior of the two. Quite enjoying the Bryan Powell track on here which I vaguely remember from back in the day, and Wreckx N Effect sound slightly aggy on their tune, which makes me wonder if it's directed at Q Tip given they got into a scuffle at some point.

Guy - Dog Me Out
Wreckx N Effect - Wreckx N Effect
Artz & Kraftz - All Of It
Kenny Dope - Ramajama
unknown - unknown
Rhythm & Bass - Tell Me (If You Want Me To)
Bryan Powell - It's Alright
Force One Network - Sista Sista
Jeff Redd - You Called And Told Me
Intro - Love Thang
Tisha - Love Me Down
Jodeci - My Phone
unknown - unknown
Bell Biv Devoe - Gangsta
>> Chris Phillips' show
Liberty - Who Is She
Mary J Blige - Reminisce (remix)

Thanks to Mr Lawson for sending me this with a few other tapes. The 30 minutes preceding this show was the rap show with Max & Dave, which has me wanting to go and hear more of that Apache LP. Gangsta Bitch was pretty big at the time but I never heard the album. Looking at production line up including 45 King, Q Tip, Diamond D and Large Professor I figure it has to be worth investigating.

DJ Swing on Choice FM (1996)

Just came across another tape of DJ Swing, mixing up some R&B and Rap on London's Choice FM back in 1996...

Kay Slay - Original Gangsters pt 3 (DISC 3)

Here's Disc 3. This one is mostly R&B with some remixes and a stack of blends - the Lucy Pearl one is a particular standout - and then gets back to what you'd expect to hear on a Streetsweepers mix...

Ghetto Jams: Urban Series 12" (1999)

Unofficial mash-up blend remix tings here. I posted the Common Sense one on its own ages ago but as I'm currently ripping a load of vinyl (before I get rid of it) I thought I'd share the rest. There's some decent stuff on here. Jay Z over a Beatnuts instrumental works well, as does 'Holla Holla' over the 'California Love' beat. The R&B joints aren't too bad either but even after all this time Fatman Scoop has rendered that Faith Evans vocal unlistenable to me.

The aforementioned vinyl ripping is partly the reason for the lack of regular updates. I did contemplate stopping the blog completely but I'll try and stay on it for now and see how things pan out. There's always a chance I might come up with some new tapes or unreleased shit for you (although the chances are slim with the way London's 2nd hand record shops are these days).

Sparkle Motion 'Night Hype' (2013)

Sparkle Motion are back with another speaker smasher for ya boomin' systems: 'Night Hype' takes it back to the days of stonewashed jean-jacket combos, doorknocker earrings, hi-top fades, 8-Ball jackets and customized Dapper Dan leathers.
During the late 80s/early 90s, R&B music was only just starting to flirt with a harder hip hop sound. Getting rappers to feature on R&B tracks was something very new at the time. Producers started moving away from polished record production to drum machine-backed rhythms that included hip hop influences.
This mix is dedicated to that era, and intended to seriously cold rock the hypest house or block party. Once you hit play, prepare for fly honeys and bass devastation everywhere. Word to ya muthaaa.

DJ J Live - Homemade Blends Vol 1 (2002)

Interesting blend CD by J Live (yep, the underground rapper dude), dropping 80s and 90s R&B acapellas over newer Hip Hop instrumentals. Some slightly unusual choices of beats on certain tracks but overall its executed pretty well. If you ever wondered what Jody Watley would sound like over Pastor Troy's 'Are We Cuttin' then wonder no more...

DJ Step One 'An R&B Sumting'

I pretty much gave up on R&B around 2005 but prior to that I was DJing a lot of nights where it was the order of the day. I hadn't played the tracks on this mix much since those days but it turned out ok (especially considering it was one-take with no planning). If you don't like it, your lady will.

D'Angelo 'Brown Sugar' (DJ Step One blend)

I'm off to see D'Angelo perform in Brixton tonight (which will possibly the be the most grown-up and civilised show I've ever been to!) so thought I'd post this blend of 'Brown Sugar' over Dre's 'Xxplosive'. Works quite nicely I think...

Turns out finding a pic of him with his shirt on was harder than hooking up the blend.

There's some less familiar tracks and remixes alongside the classics and unlike past attempts it hasn't ended up being 95% Mary J Blige. Hope you like it.

Silva Sirfa 'The Art Of Blending' (2001)

Its approaching that time of year when every blog, forum and DJ will compile a selection of 'summer joints' which without fail always feature the same tracks year in, year out. If you want an alternative to 'Regulate', 'Summertime' and the usual R&B standards you could do a lot worse than bump this blend tape from 2001(ish) by NYC's DJ Silva Sirfa...

Its upfront and classic R&B over Hip Hop beats. Its a fucking good CD basically.
