Funkmaster Flex & Tim Westwood with Craig Mack, Biggie & Puff Daddy (1994)
I think this was the first time Westwood & Flex linked up for their monthly 'Rap Exchange', where Tim would go to the US and host his show from Hot 97. This is from August 1994, when 'Flava In Ya Ear' was the biggest record in NYC and Craig Mack, Puffy and Biggie are in the studio for a freestyle session that would later appear on the b-side of Flex's 'Nuttin But Flava' single.

Flex gets busy cutting up the dope (and overlooked) 'Uptown Style' by Kirk aswell as stuff by Lady Of Rage, Troubleneck Brothers and Pete Rock & CL Smooth.

Thanks, I know the freestyles from the b-side, but great to hear it in context. Also, thanks for the Cold Crush freestyle and Nas promo you posted the other day!
ReplyDeleteThis is still Capital FM, not Radio 1. Just to get it in context (i.e. you couldn't originally hear it where I'm sitting now ...)
ReplyDeletefwiw the Capital Rap Exchanges go back to the late 80s - probably not with Flex at first, the earliest one I have from 1989 is with Marley Marl.
ReplyDeleteRobin Carmody on Step's blog - this is a world's colliding moment.
ReplyDeletemy bad on the Capital/Radio 1 mix up. Im aware of the earlier Rap Exchanges with Marley but dont have any tapes unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it a "worlds colliding moment"?
ReplyDeleteI've *always* liked this stuff. That it sometimes goes against my politics doesn't change that in itself.
