Kay Slay freestyles
Sorting through some CDs yesterday I found an old compilation of freestyles from Kay Slay mixtapes that I'd copped on a visit to Canal Street back in 2004. Here's the pick of the bunch...

Prodigy freestyle FTW.
ReplyDeleteTrips to Canal Street in the noughties were often way more fruitful than trips to A1 and Sound Library.
yeah, Prodigy over 'Pinky Ring' and 'The Watch' is greatness.
ReplyDeleteI went crazy in this one mixtape spot near the subway station. Remember grabbing Sigel 'Public Enemy #1', a couple of other Green Lantern things, Dipset 'Unreleased & Exclusives' CD and a few others. Mix "CDs" arent the same these days!
Good shit. The beauty of Kay Slay's mixtapes and freestyles were that they were all recorded at his mini-studio at his Harlem apartment. None of them were submitted to him by artist and record labels like most DJ's which would explain the really poor sound quality on Kay Slay's mixtapes. The fact that Eminem drove up to Kay Slay's neighborhood and hosted a mixtape and recorded some freestyles at his apartment for him was some crazy shit. MIXTAPE GAME T.R.O.Y.
ReplyDeletethat explains why alot of Slay's tapes had that muddy 'proper mixtape' feel em.
ReplyDeleteI've got a few others of his so I might hook up a part 2 to this post soon.
