Nas & Mobb Deep freestyle (1995)

Nas and Mobb Deep from the January 1995 Rap Exchange show. I was missing a chunk of this for years as my tape ran out half way through the recording. Someone (I forget who, but thanks) hooked it up on a forum a while back so here's 10 minutes of prime QB raps over the Shook Ones pt 2 instrumental.

Black Rob & Poo Cabrocke freestyle (1999)

A Black Rob freestyle is always welcome around these parts so cheers to Grime & Lime for extracting this from Silva Sirfa's 'Fuck The World' mixtape and hooking me up. BR and Poo Cabrocke (no, me neither - the only mention I can find of him was an appearance on a 2010 G Dep album that I forgot/didn't know existed). He sounds decent enough and goes b2b with Rob over the instrumental of Pace Won's 'Step Up'.

As I mentioned in the post below, I was putting together a comp of Prodigy freestyles which I ended up posting up on twitter and a couple of forums the other day. I think they've all been posted on this blog before over the last few years but if you want them all in one place then here you go

Mobb Deep - If These Walls Could Talk (2002)

It's hot and sunny outside but let's ignore that completely and go for some moody Queensbridge raps with this unreleased Mobb Deep joint that was on the flipside of the NORE track I posted recently.
Depending on which bootleg or mixtape you have this is also known as 'Snitch' or 'Snitched On' and samples Beethoven's Fur Elise; obviously I didn't know that until it appeared on the Google search but it's one of those classical pieces everyone recognises. Grimey.

Prodigy - Radio 1 Rap Show freestyles (2000)

"are you listening to the words or listening to the beat? listen to the words man!"

17 years ago this past weekend the M-O-B-B appeared on Westwood's show. Prodigy proceeded to go in with a 15 minute freestyle which I've kindly seperated into the 3 tracks you see above. Hearing him over The Lox's 'Fuck You' is a highlight.

If you want to listen to the whole show that those freestyle are taken from, you can find the first hour herePart 2 with Fab 5 Freddy is here and part 3 with Prodigy, Havoc and Alchemist is below

When you see your average generic American rap fan online debtaing their Top 5 rappers, or asking who the GOAT is, it's pretty much always the same fucking names. Having listened to helluva lot of Mobb Deep in the last few months (party because I was making this mix, which I highly recommend if you haven't checked it) I would say that Prodigy at his peak should definitely be in that conversation, but that rarely seems to be the case.

With that in mind, if you missed them...

Funkmaster Flex - Radio 1 Rap Show 11.09.99

Next up, here's 90 minutes of the Rap Exchange from September '99. Mobb Deep are in the studio ahead of the Murda Muzik launch party at The Tunnel that coming Sunday. No freestyle unfortunately but Flex gets busy cutting up some bangers.

For the most part, I'm not gonna be posting download links for these shows because the links die out too quickly these days. There are programmes available that will let you convert mixcloud streams to mp3 though.

Prodigy - You Ain't A Killer freestyle (1997)

"you're frail fam anything your team wanna do, you and your mans are shook part 1 and 2"

More 90s QB freestyle action. Prodigy was an absolute monster around 96/97. Here he does his thing over Big Pun's 'You Ain't A Killer' instrumental and throws a few shots at Keith Murray along the way.

Taken from DJ Clue's 'ClueManatti' tape. I'll post the full thing soon.

Prodigy & Ty Nitty - DJ Clue freestyle (1996)

Taken from DJ Clue's 'Springtyme Stickup 1996'. Prodigy and Mobb affiliate Ty Nitty over GFK's 'Motherless Child' instrumental. P was a beast back then. Full tape to follow soon...

Vinyl Reanimators remixes 12" (1997)

All the Vinyl Reanimators remixes are worth investigating. Here's a 12" they dropped in late 96/early 97 with their takes on 'Drop A Gem On Em', 'Daytona 500' and 'Ya Playin Yaself'. Instrumentals included.

the Mobb Deep bootleg (1998/9)

4 unreleased Mobb Deep joints from the late 90s 'Murda Muzik' era (I think). That album went through a few changes before its final release and these didnt make the cut...

DOWNLOAD

Sound quality is so-so and the somewhat surreal 'Horizons' ends rather abruptly but you do get Prodigy's 'Gun Love', 'Flippin' and '3 The Hard Way' (aka '3 From NYC') featuring Big Noyd. I'm sure these have circulated online before but with all the dead links about at the moment I thought a fresh rip wouldn't hurt. You're welcome.

Bars N Hooks ft Prodigy 'Aint Nobody' (2003)

Earlier this year you might remember me posting this 12" by Mobb Deep affiliates Bars N Hooks. I'd been looking for the Gap Band sampling 'Mind Blowin' for about 10 years at the time. A few weeks ago I stumbled across this 12" by the duo, which I was previously unaware of...

DOWNLOAD

As with the other release it features Prodigy and it also samples a well known 80s soul classic. This time around production is handled by Just Blaze but the release was confined to indie label Sure Shot (although it comes in an AV8 sleeve with AV371 inscribed in the run out groove). If you like early 00s East Coast thug rap on top of instantly recognisable samples - which I do - you'll enjoy this.

I had planned on dropping a few tape rips this week but my tape player has died. Bit awkward as its not technically mine but I've had it on loan for about 2 years now. Not really sure where that leaves me as far as compensating the owner. Chances are if I gave it back without saying anything he's never gonna use it and might never know. Personally I'm more concerned with where I can get a fucking tape player from in 2011. Hopefully I'll be back on the tapes soon anyway.

The Show

For those of you who need to be told, these are old flyers - not adverts for upcoming events! Im not sure if the Busta flyer is for the show that ended in The Forum getting torn up, or for the comeback show (when he actually performed). I have a feeling that the Raekwon show might've been cancelled at the last minute. I'm still a bit gutted I was too young to reach Flava Of The Month...

the post with no name (aka 'random treats')

Been a while since I last posted. No real reason for the break other than that I dropped a lot of hotness in May and thought I'd best give you time to catch up. Nothing worse than having a load of newly downloaded music and not having time to get through it all before the next gem appears.
Theres no specific theme to this post other than to offer up a few things from my hardrive that you might not have come across before, but at the same time probably dont warrant their own post. Enjoy...

Jay Z 'Feelin It' (Rosco's ride-out blend)
I found this on Soundcloud. Uses the 'It Was A Good Day' instrumental. Nice.

Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz 'Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)' Bay Area mix
Promo only business to keep the regional DJs sweet. This has the same beat but the chorus shouts out towns and cities in The Bay rather than NYC.

The Firm 'Freestyle'
Think I got this off the 'Firm Biz' CD single. Uses the Alkaholiks 'Hip Hop Drunkies' beat.

Mobb Deep 'True Lies'
I'm guessing this is from around 1997ish. Not 100% but I dont think it ever saw an official release. If it did and any of you have a better quality version than the bootleg vinyl rip I've posted here then hook me up!

Bars & Hooks ft Prodigy 'Mind Blowing' (2001)

I first heard the tracks on this 12" on a DJ Juice mixtape 10 years ago. A few months back I finally got hold of a vinyl copy on discogs (shout out to DJ B.Cause).

DOWNLOAD

The lead track features the Mobb affiliates and Prodigy rhyming over the Gap Band's classic 'Outstanding' which is probably why I like it so much. 'Independence Day' uses the beat from 'The Message' and 'YBE' is a remix of the track originally found on Bandana P's 'HNIC' album.
Given how long it took me to track this down I was initially a bit reluctant to share it (old digging habits die hard!) but given the plethora of Mobb-related blog posts following Prodigy's release from prison I thought I'd give you something you might not have yet.

Stackin Cheddar Music: Camp Lo, Mobb Deep & GZA remixes

Three not-entirely-official remixes of some 90s classics on this 12". Mobb Deep and GZA get the 'jackin for beats' treatment while Camp Lo's 'Luchini' is matched up with a nice laidback piano-led instrumental.

Ron G - Flava Beyond Flava Vol 4 (1996)

Obscure 12" time now. Here's 4 blends from mixtape legend Ron G. First up is Mobb Deep over 'The Message' (or Puff & Mase 'Cant Hold Me Down'), followed by a 'jackin for beats' style mix of '1nce Again' using old ATCQ instrumentals. The Buju Banton track is cool but I can't place the beat right now, and finishing things up is Ron's infamous blend of the 'My Melody' instrumental with verses from KRS, Buckshot, Raekwon and Nas.

Mobb Deep x DJ Premier - DJ Step One blends

Been playing around with a few records this afternoon and came up with these two blends using Mobb Deep acapellas over some DJ Premier beats...

Mobb Deep 'Hell On Earth' (DJ Step One blend)
using the beat from Common's 'The 6th Sense'

Mobb Deep ft Nas 'Its Mine' (DJ Step One blend)
using the beat from Royce 5'9 'Hip Hop'
