Tape Kingz #3: DJ Snips

Stepping up next to drop his top 3 mixes is DJ Snips. Currently based in NY, Snips co-promoted and DJ'd at Livin Proof which was one of London's biggest hip hop nights. His production CV includes Trife, Cappadonna, Skyzoo and the infamous Poisonous Poets crew which included Lowkey, Doc Brown, Reveal and Tony D. He's currently in the middle of releasing a new beat every week as part of his 52 Beats project.

DJ Spinna - Live on Westwood (1999) This one always sticks in my head as it was a pivotal time for hip hop when the underground and mainstream worlds were completely divided. It seemed like a breath of fresh air to hear a DJ like Spinna, who was very much a staple in the underground scene, on a show like Westwood's, who by that time would rarely play records from that world.

Kid Capri - 52 Beats What even needs to be said about this? Hip Hop DJing 101. With the introduction of the internet many of these breaks are common knowledge to most people but that wasn’t always the case. I recently named my latest beat tape after this.

DJ Premier - NY Reality Check 101 (1997)

This and Stretch Armstrong's 'The Lesson' were the pinnacle of mid-late 90s NY indie hip hop. This tape stands out to me particularly because I used it as a gauge to make my own tapes. I had doubles of most of the 12”s on here and was imitating Premo's juggles as a way to get tighter myself. Seems fitting in hindsight as I did the same thing with his beats when I started producing.

Gang Starr - Capital Rap Show freestyle (1990)

Daaaaamn son, Guru busting Take A Rest over the Eat Em Up L Chill beat on Westwood back in 1990? Finding things like this is what keeps me going through these tapes and trying to hunt more down.

Guru freestyle (2005)

I saw Guru performing with Solar and Doo Wop back in 2005 and copped this mix CD after the show. It's basically a best of mix, hosted by Guru but it seems like he's also playing the tracks. Off one deck. Low budget merch issues aside  - maybe it was done at short notice, when I bought my ticket it was billed as a Gang Starr show - what did make it worth getting was the freestyles over some non-Gang Starr Premier beats, such as The 6th Sense, So Ghetto, Nas Is Like, Unbelievable and also Quiet Storm.  I posted them up in zipfile about 8 years ago but they're all pretty short so I figured it would be easier to paste them all together into one continuous track.

Cuttin off wack kids...

You know how we do. I'll do the whole album if I have to. I don't need to hear Royce 5'9, Conway & Rapsody or whoever else shoehorned into this.

Stretch & Bobbito on Hot 97 with DJ Premier (1997)

Another tape from the batch Tobes gave me. Think this one may have been online before as there's a tracklist on the S&B blog. As with every single radio show and mixtape from the second half of 1997, this includes You Know My Steez and Its Been A Long Time. There's some nice indie tracks on here too, plus Wu All Stars 'Sole In The Hole' which is one of the better songs by a Wu Tang spin off.

DJ Premier on the Radio 1 Rap Show (1998)

90 minutes of Primo in the mix on Radio 1. No talking just tunes and a lot of his own productions as he was on something of a roll at the time - Jay Z, MOP, Rakim, All City and Krumbsnatcha all feature. Thanks to Tobes for providing the tape of this one.

Sad news about Prodigy - couldn't believe he was only 42 either. Obviously I've posted quite a few Mobb related things recently and I've recently been in the process of putting together a comp of his freestyles which I'll post up soon (just need a couple more to finish it off).

Radio 1 Rap Show 25.03.00
New York Live with DJ Premier & Sauce Money

Another New York Live show broadcast from Marley Marl's crib with Cipha Sounds holding down turntable duties. DJ Premier and Sauce Money (someone I've been listening to a lot recently) are in the studio on part two.

I actually posted some of this show back in 2009 but my recording stopped just as Premier appears, so it's nice to have the whole show.

The Westwood Archives mixcloud page is up and running so make sure you keep an eye on that as I might throw a few shows on there that don't make it to the blog. Figure it might be best to just drop the more notable shows and highlights (freestyles, mixes etc) otherwise it will end up being straight Westwood tape rips on here for the next 3 or 4 years.

Bulletproof Beats 13 - DJ Premier edition

100% Premier productions courtesy of Smudge Smith. Been meaning to do one of these myself for years but aways had trouble nailing down a track selection as there's just too much to chose from. Definitely some of the less obvious joints on this one though.

DJ Premier - WBLS Thunderstorm (1994)

Primo in the mix on NY radio back in '94.

Not one of my own rips but something I picked up from a blog many moons ago so thought I'd throw it on the Mixcloud page, which is still on and poppin with mixes from the OBFZL archives being uploaded every day.

DJ Premier - The True Heads Merch mix (2014)

A mix of some of the less lauded tracks from Gang Starr's catalogue, put together by Primo to launch the Gang Starr clothing line (seems a bit late, but there you go)

DJ Premier on Future Flavas (2003)

Another one out of the Junior Pepaseed collection (for which we should all be very grateful). 60 minutes of Primo on Marley Marl's Future Flavas show back in 2003 when it was broadcast on 66Raw, which I think was an online or satellite station. The tracklist tells you all need to know...

Nas & AZ blends

Updates have been a bit thin on the ground recently as I've been busy with radio stuff, plus the summer has kicked in here in the UK so I havent really had the opportunity to rip any more tapes. As I dont want this site to just consist of mixcloud links to my shows, I thought I'd post up a couple of blends for you...

Nas 'Thiefs Theme' (DJ Step One blend)
This one matches the Nas acapella with the DJ Premier beat from Termanology's 'Watch How It Go Down'

AZ 'The Come Up (DJ Step One blend)
AZ's 'The Come Up' over the beat from one of my favourite tunes so far this year: DJ Numark & Large Professor's 'When You Sleep'.

The next Infinite Hip Hop Show on Kane FM is this coming Saturday at 6pm. I also filled in last week for 2 hours - you can check that out here.

Guru freestyles

Taken from a CD I bought at a Guru show back in 2005, heres a few short freestyles over some classic (non-Gang Starr) Primo beats such as '6th Sense', 'Nas Is Like', 'Unbelievable' and 'So Ghetto' aswell as Mobb Deep's 'Quiet Storm'...

DOWNLOAD

I was going to wait until the first anniversary of his passing on April 19th but chances are every blog under the sun will be doing tributes that day (plus I'm likely to forget) so I thought I'd get in there early with something different.
If you missed it first time round you can still get the Guru freestyle on Kiss FM from 2004 HERE

Mobb Deep x DJ Premier - DJ Step One blends

Been playing around with a few records this afternoon and came up with these two blends using Mobb Deep acapellas over some DJ Premier beats...

Mobb Deep 'Hell On Earth' (DJ Step One blend)
using the beat from Common's 'The 6th Sense'

Mobb Deep ft Nas 'Its Mine' (DJ Step One blend)
using the beat from Royce 5'9 'Hip Hop'
