Tim Westwood - Capital Rap Show (1994)

Ah, June 94: I'd just finished my exams and discovered getting stoned. 'Illmatic' had just dropped and Westwood's show was still a must on the weekends.
Theres some good stuff on this tape - 'Cuz Its Wrong' by Slick Rick for one, as I'd completely forgotten how much I liked that track. Also, theres LL's elusive (although allegedly dropping soon) 'Year Of The Hip Hop', Nice N Smooth, Rampage, Guttersnypes, OC and Kurious. Side 2 is more smoothed out with some Snoop, Warren G, Blackstreet and Hi-Five.

Thanks to Mr Lawson for the tape.

DJ 279 - Friday Night Flava on Choice FM (1993)

DJ 279 has been holding it down on the radio since the early 90s. Unfortunately while Westwood was broadcasting nationally and Kiss FM covered London and the surrounding counties, picking up Choice FM was pretty much impossible if you were off the tube map. As a result, tapes of The Numberman's Friday Night Flava shows are harder to come by than those of his competition (I've been asking around for a while now). Fortunately that man Mr Lawson has come through with a show from June 1993

Hopefully some more tapes will surface soon. If you want to check out more in the meantime, check Big Ted's blog for some audio of Nas on the show in 1994.

Cocoa Chanelle 'Best Kept Secret' (1997)

Another one from Mr Lawson! This is the first Cocoa Channel tape I've heard and she's pretty damn good. Some blends and cuts along with a few 'exclusives' and a KRS & Redman freestyle on the intro. Check it...

Funkmaster Flex & Tim Westwood - April 1995

This is the full tape of the April 1995 Rap Exchange that the ODB and Smif N Wessun freestyles below were taken from.

This was a favourite tape of mine back then. Fortunately Mr Lawson came through with a copy as I was still going a bit crazy with the pause button in those days.

Pete Rock & The UN on Kiss FM (2001)

Pete Rock & The UN being interviewed by Big Ted on London's Kiss FM whilst they were in town promoting the 'Petestrumentals' album back in 2001.

DOWNLOAD

This is a pretty interesting interview, especially where Ted quizzes Pete on certain rappers he has/hasn't worked with, plus theres the mandatory freestyle session at the end, although its worth hearing for the Nas impressions alone!

Shout out to Mr Lawson for sending this one over.

You can catch Big Ted every friday at midnight on Colourful Radio

LL Cool J - Kiss FM freestyle (2004)

Freestyles by James Todd Smith are pretty hard to come by as far as I can tell. Here's one from 2004 when MK was hosting the Hip Hop show on Kiss FM. LL goes in over E Rule's classic 'Listen Up'...

Thanks to Mr Lawson for hooking me up with the original tape on this one.

London Posse on Kiss FM (1993)

Following my London Posse post last month (which proved quite popular), here's Rodney P & Bionic on Kiss FM, promoting the release of their new EP.
Kiss had only been a legal station for a couple of years at this point and the Wednesday night Rap show was hosted by Max LX & Dave VJ. Tracks off the EP are played during the interview and its finished off with a wicked freestyle over Lords Of The Underground's 'Funky Child' instrumental.

Massive big up and thanks to Mr Lawson for coming through and hooking me up with the tape of this. All I had was a really bad quality copy of the freestyle and seeing as it was something I played to death back then I'm loving having a decent MP3 of it!

London Posse biography

Although I was a regular listener I dont have any full tapes of Max N Dave's shows (I was young and didnt have money for new TDKs every week so I just taped the tracks I liked). If anyone out there has some they want to share get in touch.
