Biz Markie - Theory Of Old School

More classic funk and soul from The Diabolical one. Perfect Sunday cool out music.

Clark Kent, Biz Markie & Funkmaster Flex live at Mecca (1994)

Recorded live on a Sunday night in NYC back in early '94 (I'm guessing), with Clark Kent, Biz and Flex on the tables at Mecca. If you've checked a few tapes of club nights from this period you'll know that the selection tends to be largely the same but it's a good listen regardless - classic hip hop, funk & soul and breaks.

Funkmaster Flex & Biz Markie live in NYC (1994)

I'm back. New tape deck, more tapes, less time than ever. This one is off a TDK simply labelled 'Funkmaster Flex Birthday' but I have a feeling it's this under another name (which was posted online years ago - can anyone confirm it's the same tape?)

Flex and Biz Markie get busy with a full on party set - old school, new school, reggae, funk, soul and some slow jams (ugh) at the end.

Thanks to Diablo and MK (it's his writing on the tape) for this one.

Biz Markie - Live at The Que Club (May 1994)

The Diabolical one on the tables at NYC's Q Club in May '94. Loving hearing the crowd singalong to Ain't No Fun when Biz cuts the volume...

Thanks again to Diablo for this one.

Biz Markie on Dutchmastaz Radio (1998)

Biz is in the house for this edition of the long running Dutch radio show. While I was searching for a bit more info I came across this mixcloud page with a bunch of other shows, including this one which is where I took the date from. Original tape courtesy of OG Tobes .

Biz Markie on the Radio 1 Rap Show (2001)

Biz touches down in the UK for an appearance at the Essential Festival. There's some reminiscing about the old days and a a chat about rare joints  - anyone know what the 'talking version' of The Vapors is? - before Biz clumsily mixes up some breaks (we'll put it down to jet lag) and drops a few of his own tracks with a bit of beatboxing  in between.

I edited out the beginning of the show as there was about 25 minutes of Biggie and 2Pac tunes, followed by Tim debuting Jay Z's 'Izzo' by playing it 2 times in a row, and a total of 4 times in the 3 hour show. Method Man and Teddy Riley's 'Party And Bullshit' also got played twice and that really isn't a very good song. You do get a Break To The Beat segment though which I thought had been done away with by the 2000s. Maybe it was because Biz was in the house.

Redman & Biz Markie freestyle (1990)

One thats been online before but I couldnt find the MP3 so I just ripped it off a tape I had instead.

I think this originally first surfaced on Stretch Armstrong's blog (and as that was 6 years years ago, the links are now dead)
"We'd play this cassette on the air frequently, despite the awful sound quality, and it was regularly requested. It's the first time most people heard Redman, and you could imagine the buzz it created for the young Reggie Noble. Red has often sited us playing this as his break - the reason he got on. That may or may not be true, but it definitely created a huge interest in him among the listeners. Biz is entertaining as usual, but because this is only audio, you don't get the full Biz experience. Redman, on the other hand, just destroys it."

Biggie, Craig Mack, Biz Markie, Rampage & Mic Geronimo - Live Freestyle (1995)

Some rare audio footage here: Biggie, Craig Mack, Biz Markie, Mic Geronimo and Rampage freestylying live at an NYC nightclub.
Taken from an old DJ Clue tape, this isn't something out of my stash but I found it whilst googling for something else and as I hadn't heard it before thought I'd share it here.

something for the people...

I haven't had much time to rip tapes or make mixes recently but I'm aiming to get back on track this week.
Here's a few things I've come across that are worth checking in the meantime:

Rakim & Biz Markie live at a Wyandance High School jam back in 1985

The best rap singles of the noughties

Good piece on Rap-A-Lot's production team

Dope (and seriously thorough) write up on UK legends London Posse

A seemingly endless supply of classic mixtapes

Shout to all the blogs that regularly update with original content!
