DJ Filthy Rich - 90's Reggae-Hip Hop Vol.2 (2018)

Filthy Rich is back with Volume 2 of his Reggae Hip Hop mixtape...

"For those of you who aren't familiar with the 1st volume, I had an idea to create a series of mixes containing 90’s dancehall reggae artists over 90’s hip hop beats. Everything from popular hits to obscure white label-only remixes, including my own custom blends of 90’s reggae acapellas over hiphop instrumentals from that time period. What began as a casual one-off “best of” type mix, evolved into a multi-volume obsession. I even learned to produce my own party breaks just for this project.
The first 40 mins of this mix starts with an uptempo, early 90's boom-bap feel.  The next 50 mins segues into mid-tempo, mid-90's vibes. I've decided to keep the track list under wraps for now. Reason being, I always found it more fun to not know what's next. There was a certain thrill when I heard a dope track, but couldn't identify it.  In this age of digital playlists where everything is meticulously labeled, I felt I'd try to bring back some of the mystique of the mixTAPE era.  Some of my favourite mixtapes that I bought back in the 90's had no track list at all...I had to figure it out for myself.  I appreciate those tapes that much more because of it.
For those of you who absolutely MUST have a track list, I'll eventually type one up and put it out.....but I'll let this mix marinate with you for a bit.

Feel free to contact me with your feedback....I'd love to know what people think, and I'm open to suggestions for the next volume. I gotta large up my old friend Masia One for blessin' me with the cover art.The old 90's Reggae party poster style fits the vibe of this mix perfectly"

You can find Volume 1 here and make sure you c
heck his Audiomack page for some dope blends

DJ Malcolm X on Hott FM, Barbados (1999)

This is something a friend of mine bought back from a holiday in Barbados and it's always a good one to throw on when the sun's out. Just under an hour of the island's Hott FM with DJ Malcolm X mixing up some dancehall and hip hop on a Friday afternoon, Highlights include the very cheesy station jingle at the start, regular ads for the upcoming Def Jam Back To School party, underpinned by Crooklyn Clan's 'Oh Noooo' which reworks Ruff Ryders Anthem into the melody of Superthug (genius stuff), a dancehall track using the synths from Prince's 1999 and ragga takes of Hate Me Now and Redman's Da Goodness, plus a blend of Top Billin over Das EFX's Mic Checka.

Not entirely sure about a DJ calling himself Malcolm X but love the fact that there's a Bajan DJ called The Chiuahua Businessman.

Tim Westwood at Notting Hill Carnival (1995)

It's a 3 day weekend here in the UK which means there's a bunch of stuff going on including Notting Hill Carnival. Over the years I've posted up a few bits from Westwood's stage as I'd taped the 95 and 96 sets when they were broadcast on Radio 1. In this 40 minute segment he goes in with a wicked dancehall selection - Bounty Killer, Supercat, Lady Saw, Merciless etc - and then switches into some early 90s Hip Hop. It's nice hearing the whistle posse and horn crew giving it up for songs like Time 4 Sum Aksion and Uptown Anthem, and they're properly loving the ragga stuff too.

Some of the '96 tape is available on the Westwood Archives Mixcloud page

Jazzie B on Kiss FM (1997)

Jazzie B of Soul II Soul fame on London's Kiss FM back in July 1997. This is the first 40 minutes of his 'Funki Dred Show' and its all ragga over Hip Hop beats: Bounty Killer over 'Hell On Earth', Lady Saw over 'Hypnotize', plus tracks by Frisco Kid and Sleepy Wonder amongst others...

I'm still without a tape deck but I preserved this on CD years ago as for a long time it was the only place I had all these tracks. Jazzie rarely used to mention track names and it was only by taking an educated gamble on certain 12"s (usually white labels) over the years that I've managed to get hold of most of them. Anyway, this was probably one of my favourite and most played tapes so go get that.

The Heatwave present '25 Years Of Dancehall' (2010)

For the reggae heads, courtesy of London's Heatwave crew

GO HERE

"Tuesday 23rd February 2010 marked the 25th anniversary of the day that Wayne Smith's Under Me Sleng Teng was first played in a dance.

To celebrate the 25th birthday of digital dancehall we looked back over the last quarter century of this brilliant music and had a quick party on our Rinse FM show. It was mad to look at how things have developed over two and a half decades.
The plan was to choose one tune from every year since 1985 while at the same time ensuring that all the key artists from the period were represented. We couldn't quite keep it to only 25 tunes and even then some notable vocalists and very big tunes got left out.
I suppose there's always someone who gets left out at a birthday party. Big up Kiprich, Cecile, TOK, Terry Ganzie, Serani, Spice and all the other artists whose invites got lost in the post"
